HISTORY OF
FACULTY
GOVERNANCE

The University of Arizona Faculty Senate was organized under the first Faculty Constitution in the fall of 1947. The Constitution has been revised several times since 1947, yet the functions of the Faculty Senate have remained relatively unchanged. Originally, the Faculty Senate's membership included the President of the University (who served as the Senate's presiding officer from 1947 to 1980), the vice president, the deans, the Registrar, fifteen members elected by the faculty-at-large, and one member elected by each college faculty. During the period from 1967 to 1991, the composition of the Faculty Senate included twice as many elected senators as ex-officio members. In 1975, nine student members were added. Total Senate membership reached 84 in 1990-91.   Reduction of the ex-officio membership and abandonment of the two-to-one ratio in 1991 brought the total membership down to 60 (20 at-large, 27 college, 6 ex-officio, and 7 student members).  The current total membership is 63, due to the addition of the Vice Chair of the Faculty position in Fall 1998 and the granting of voting status to one additional college representative in Spring 1999 and one additional college representative in Spring 2000.
