Committee of Eleven Activities

The Committee of Eleven has no prescribed agenda as do committees of the Faculty Senate or other faculty governance committees. The Committee functions in part in a faculty advocacy role and in part by actively seeking information about existing and emerging issues. It can take initiatives directed at any area of the university community or propose solutions for the betterment of the University community. After studying the issues, the committee may recommend action to the appropriate bodies. Other bodies, such as administrative units or the Faculty Senate can request the Committee of Eleven to consider various matters. The Committee of Eleven is especially effective as a vehicle for addressing issues that are so broad they do not fit within the purview of a standing committee or single administrative area. Based on the Faculty Constitution, the Committee has defined its function as: initiating, promoting and stimulating study to solve problems of Faculty and University concern.

Examples of Previous or Continuing Activities of the Committee of Eleven

The activities listed below are examples of past and present activities of the Committee. They are provided for illustrative purposes only and are not necessarily indicative of future activities.

• Solicit views of faculty regarding university wide issues or needs (such as: presidential search criteria, planning directions, faculty governance, faculty rewards)
• Recommend university-wide procedural changes (such as: improvement in student writing effectiveness, undergraduate education initiative, departmental and collegial governance, options for 12 month pay and parental leaves, teaching evaluations and inadequate funding of teaching)
• Study and report as appropriate on issues of broad interest (such as: university administrative costs, impacts on academic programs resulting from financial constraints, future of the university (through public forums), affirmative action, athletics, methods of dealing with interdisciplinary programs, and major reorganizations (e.g.,  University College, Science and Technology Park, College of Medicine).
• Conduct dialogues with various administrators and faculty forums on selected university issues (such as: revising the university personnel system, student requirements, enrollment caps)
• Facilitate meetings of various faculty governance groups to avoid duplication (e.g., Faculty Senate committees, Committee on Academic Freedom and Tenure, Conciliation, Committee of Eleven)
• Meet with the President and other senior level administrators as well as with appropriate external groups (e.g., regents, legislators) to provide dialog or to evaluate candidates for senior level positions.
• Meet with faculty to discuss matters of general university or departmental interest and to describe the role of the Committee of Eleven
