Exploring the Entrepreneurial
Dimensions of Science and Technology Research
- A University of Arizona, open-forum workshop series
hosted by the McGuire Center for Entrepreneurship and
the Office of Technology Transfer. The McGuire Center
for Entrepreneurship and the Office of Technology
Transfer is pleased to announce a workshop series titled
"Exploring the Entrepreneurial Dimensions of Science and
Technology Research." This series is designed to
engage the university learning community, including
faculty, students, and administrators, in lively
discussion of the potential applied values of the
scientific and technological discoveries made at The
University of Arizona. Further, the workshops will help
enhance the entrepreneurial network that exists
throughout the academic and business community, thereby
promoting collaborative efforts toward moving
technologies out of the university in the form of
innovative solutions to many of the problems facing our
community and broader society. Welcome and Bio5
Institute mission overview by Nina Ossanna,
Ph.D., Director of Business Development, BIO5 Research
Institute, and Special Projects for Life Sciences,
Office of Technology Transfer; Research presentation:
A Drug Class for Anti-cancer Therapy by
Emmanuelle J. Meuillet, Ph.D., Assistant Professor,
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Departments of
Nutritional Sciences and Molecular and Cellular Biology.
There is an unmet need in the field of cancer treatment,
as well as diabetes, pain, periodontal diseases and
cardiovascular diseases: All NSAIDs or aspirin have
secondary effects, stomach bleeding or secondary deadly
cardiovascular effects. The goal is to discover drugs
that will selectively inhibit a specific class of enzyme
responsible for the formation of inflammation-induced
prostaglandins. Dr. Meuillet will explain how novel
inhibitors developed in her lab are tested against these
above mentioned diseases. Exploratory discussion /
open forum facilitated by Dr. Ossanna.
Seating is limited and RSVP is requested. Please email
Matt Mars at mmars@eller.arizona.edu by 10am on May 2,
2008 to reserve your spot in this exciting and
worthwhile workshop.
May 2 - 6pm - The Leukemia & Lymphoma
Society Celebrity Waiters Dinner in Memory of Larry Smith
Doubletree Hotel on Alvernon
The event raises a lot of money with silent and live auction
items and through ticket sales to the dinner. The
celebrities are local celebrities and athletes, Josh Pastner,
radio and tv personalities, etc. If this is something
you're interested in being involved with, let me know!
Every ten minutes, a child or adult dies from a
blood-related cancer. Over 785,000 Americans are presently
living with a blood cancer. While these statistics are
overwhelming, there is hope for those faced with hearing
those devastating words, you have cancer. Assistance by your
group would help the Society to provide hope through
groundbreaking research and financial assistance to
patients. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is dedicated to
finding cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkins, and myeloma
and to improve the quality of life for patients and their
families. One way is through research we are supporting
right here at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
Contributions help ease the burden of those individuals
whose world will forever be changed by blood cancers. If
you are interested in getting involved, contact

Harmony with the Sun event
AZ-Sonora Desert Museum (2021 N. Kinney Rd)
One out of five Americans will develop
skin cancer, the most common form of cancer in the United

and if detected early, are highly treatable. To help people
learn how to enjoy Arizona’s approximately 350 sunny days
each year and understand UV exposure, the Arizona Cancer
Center’s Skin Cancer Institute is joining the Arizona-Sonora
Desert Museum to present the third annual Living in Harmony
with the Sun event. The weekend activities will highlight
skin cancer prevention and detection at one of Southern
Arizona’s most popular attractions. Local
dermatologists, recruited by the Tucson Dermatology Society,
will be on hand to conduct a limited number of free skin
cancer screenings (first come/first served). Interactive
educational displays and children’s activities will also be
featured. Commercial vendors such as Neutrogena and Solar
Eclipse clothing will be on hand to display sun safety
products. Free with Museum admission

May 5: 5:30 p.m. - Countdown to Mars! Your Guide to the
Mars Phoenix Mission
Enoteca Pizzeria Wine Bar, 58 W. Congress Street
Presenter: Patrick Woida, Phoenix Senior
Engineer and Rigel Woida, OFB Principle Engineer, Phoenix
Mars Mission Admission: Free. Food: Free
appetizers. Beverages available for purchase. Flandrau: The
UA Science Center is holding its next "got Science? Caf?quot;
at Enoteca Pizzeria Wine Bar in downtown Tucson on Monday,
May 5, 2008 at 5:30 pm. The Science Caf?is a casual forum
for people to meet and discuss a particular science topic
with UA scientists in the relaxed atmosphere of a local
restaurant. Topics of discussion vary each month, but each
is current, relevant and, at times, slightly edgy and
humorous - or controversial. Have you been wondering
what's happening with the Phoenix Mars Mission? Do you know
what science will be conducted on the Martian surface? Do
you want a personal guide from the experts on what to expect
when the Phoenix Mars Lander lands on Mars on May 25, 2008?
Then you won't want to miss the Science Caf on Monday, May
5th, at 5:30 p.m., when University of Arizona Phoenix Mars
Mission scientists Patrick and Rigel Woida will start off
the evening with a short talk entitled "Countdown to Mars!
Your Guide to the Mars Phoenix Mission."
Successfully launched in August 2007, the Phoenix Mars
mission is designed to study the history of water and
habitability potential in the Martian arctic's ice-rich
soil. Information gathered by the Phoenix Mars mission may
help scientists determine whether Mars was, or is, capable
of supporting life as we know it. Most scientists agree that
the presence of liquid water is the primary requirement for
life. Shipherd Reed will moderate the discussion. Reed, who
promises to wrap things up by 730 p.m., will keep the
discussion lively and on track. In
conclusion, audience members will have the opportunity to
submit discussion topic ideas for subsequent Science Caf
events. Enoteca Pizzeria and Wine Bar is located at 58
W. Congress St. on the northeast corner of W. Congress St.
and N. Church Ave. After 5 p.m. free parking is available on
local streets. For more information about Flandrau: The UA

were rolled out of St. Mary’s Hospital into a world where
colored race meant a long row to hoe." Ernie is a retired
educator who served the San Diego Unified School District
for 37 years as a teacher, vice-principal, and a principal
of schools from elementary through high school. A Tucson
