Description of Lecture & Speaker - In his

to food security and just access to
culturally-appropriate foods in our multi-cultural
region. He will highlight the work of a new
borderlands food alliance that began at The
University of Arizona called Sabores Sin Fronteras
that is working on reducing the carbon footprint of
our food system by fostering direct marketing of
solar-saturated rather than fossil-fuel-saturated
foods. Dubbed the father of the local food
movement by Mother Earth News, Nabhan has edited and
authored more than 20 books on natural history,
conservation, sustainable agriculture and culinary
folklore. Nabhan is the co-founder of Renewing
America's Food Traditions Alliance, Native
Seeds/SEARCH, Canyon Country Fresh Food Network, and
Amazon Conservation Team. Active in the
disciplines of conservation biology, biocultural
geography, agro-ecology, literary natural history,
and borderlands studies, Nabhan is involved in many
interdisciplinary projects. Nabhan is equally
esteemed in both the scientific and literary
communities. He has received a MacArthur "genius"
Fellowship, a Pew Scholarship on Conservation and
Environment, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from
the Society for Conservation Biology. Likewise, his
writing is widely anthologized and translated, and
he won the John Burroughs Medal for Nature Writing,
a Western States Book Award, and a Lannan Literary
Fellowship. Nabhan's most recent book,
"Arab/American: Landscape, Culture, and Cuisine in
Two Great Deserts" (University of Arizona Press) is
a finalist in the 2010 ONEBOOKAZ competition. This
fall, Nabhan also received an honorary degree of
Doctor of Science from Carleton College.

Oct 15: 5:30-7pm - HR Job Search Roundtable
USB Rm 116
Have you recently experienced a job
transition or are considering a career change within or
outside the University? Have you asked yourself any of the
following questions: What is the best way to prepare for
organizational changes? How do I market myself in an
interview? Does my resume highlight my skills and
accomplishments? What do I need to know about
layoffs/non-renewals? What are the best strategies for
"networking" with others? HR Employee and Career Advising is
hosting a Job Search Roundtable to help answer these and
other career management questions. The discussion is open to
UA employees and recent retirees. This month's session will
focus on the use of Social Networking for job search
purposes and will include a presentation on this topic.
Following the presentation, there is no set agenda and there
will be opportunities to discuss topics specific to the
needs of the attendees. Meetings are held the 3rd
Thursday of the month in Room 116 of the University Services
Building. To register follow this link:

Send your thanks to
our soldiers.
It only takes a minute and is so worthwhile.
If you go to the
web site
http://www.letssaythanks.com/ you can pick out a thank you card
and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is
currently serving in Iraq. You can't pick out who gets it, but it
will go to some member of the armed services. It is FREE and it
only takes a second. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the soldiers
received a bunch of these? I sent mine, now you send one too! |

Curb Auto
Theft with the Watch Your Car Program:
It's Quick, Easy and FREE!
The Watch Your Car
decal program is a free, voluntary program that
vehicle owners enroll their vehicles with the
Arizona Automobile Theft Authority. The vehicle is
then entered into the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD)
database and participants receive decals for their
front and rear windows. By displaying the decals,
vehicle owners convey to law enforcement officials
that their vehicle is not usually in use between the
hours of 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM, when the majority of
auto thefts occur. In addition, by enrolling in the
Watch Your Car Program, vehicle owners also
authorize law enforcement officials to stop their
vehicle at any time during the day or night within
one mile of the border, if there is a suspicion that
the vehicle is being illegally operated.
If a police officer
witnesses the vehicle in operation between these
hours, they have the right to stop the vehicle and
verify it is being legally operated by the rightful
owner.
