Mar 8: 1-4pm - High Occupancy
Vehicle (HOV) Training
USA Bldg Rm 104 (register
on-line)
The HOV training program has been modified to meet State of
Arizona requirements. HOVs are defined as any full size van
or Sport Utility Vehicle with seating capacity of 8-15, and
full size cargo vans. Minivans and SUVs with seating
capacity of less than 8 do NOT require HOV driver training
or certification. All HOV drivers (faculty, staff,
students, volunteers) must attend a classroom training
session, AND successfully complete a behind-the-wheel road
test conducted by RM&S or other authorized observer. Road
tests conducted by RM&S are scheduled separately from the
classroom training, and must be done by appointment. The
behind-the-wheel road test takes about 30 minutes to
complete. Departments may conduct the behind-the-wheel road
test at their own convenience with their own staff upon
prior approval and authorization by RM&S. Those interested
in conducting their own behind-the-wheel road tests should
contact John Murphy at 621-4551 or
murphjoh@email.arizona.edu for orientation and approval.
For details on these new requirements, and other important
policy changes, see the new UA Fleet Safety Policy.
Classes are subject to cancellation or re-scheduling based
on the number of registrations received. To register
for an HOV training session, or a behind-the-wheel road
test, contact Sara Thomas at 626-1136 or

register on-line. For questions about the training
requirement and HOV policy, contact John Murphy at 621-4551

migration were just as immediate and important 12,000 years
ago as they are today. ASM archaeologist James Watson and
ethnohistorian Michael Brescia take you on a three-day
expedition through northern Sonora to explore key places
that reveal how prehistoric, historic and contemporary
inhabitants created their dynamic and intertwined histories
with the inhabitants of southern Arizona over the last dozen
millennia. See

Mar 27 & 28: Southwest Indian Art Fair
Desert Diamond Casino
Southern Arizona's premier Indian art show
and market has been rescued from a 2010 hiatus by a benefit
affair hosted by Desert Diamond Casino.
Arizona State
Museum announced last October that its 17th annual
Southwest Indian Art Fair, or SWIAF, would have to take
a one-year hiatus due to budget cuts and staff layoffs.
Since then, members of the museum's advisory board and
members of the community have been collaborating to devise a
way to salvage this year's event while building a more
stable financial base for 2011. "We quickly realized that
Native artists could not survive this year with the loss of
yet another art market; several in the Southwest have
already folded or faded," said Mark Bahti, museum advisory
board member, Indian art trader and owner of Bahti Indian
Arts in Tucson. "And we realized that the museum could ill
afford the loss of another important public program,
particularly its largest and signature event." This
year, Desert Diamond Casino, an enterprise of the Tohono
O'odham Nation, has stepped up to offer its facility at I-19
and Pima Mine Road. Event planners from the Southern
Arizona Arts and Cultural Association will be handling the
logistical details on behalf of the museum. Previous
fairs have been held on the grounds of Arizona State Museum
and run by museum staff. "While the event is definitely
evolving, we are committed to preserving the educational
components so central to our Southwest Indian Art Fair in
particular, and to all the Arizona State Museum's public
programs in general," said Arizona State Museum Director
Beth Grindell. "As always, our guests can expect to be able
to chat with Native artists about their work, learn about
the cultural and historical significance of the pieces they
will be taking into their homes, and gaining further
appreciation for Southwest American Indian traditions."
Proceeds from the benefit will go directly to producing the
2011 Southwest Indian Art Fair. In the coming year, museum
staff and advisory board members will be looking at all
possibilities for strengthening the fair's financial base,
which will include securing corporate sponsorships and more
community involvement.

Send your thanks to
our soldiers.
It only takes a minute and is so worthwhile.
If you go to the
web site
http://www.letssaythanks.com/ you can pick out a thank you card
and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is
currently serving in Iraq. You can't pick out who gets it, but it
will go to some member of the armed services. It is FREE and it
only takes a second. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the soldiers
received a bunch of these? I sent mine, now you send one too! |

Curb Auto
Theft with the Watch Your Car Program:
It's Quick, Easy and FREE!
The Watch Your Car
decal program is a free, voluntary program that
vehicle owners enroll their vehicles with the
Arizona Automobile Theft Authority. The vehicle is
then entered into the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD)
database and participants receive decals for their
front and rear windows. By displaying the decals,
vehicle owners convey to law enforcement officials
that their vehicle is not usually in use between the
hours of 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM, when the majority of
auto thefts occur. In addition, by enrolling in the
Watch Your Car Program, vehicle owners also
authorize law enforcement officials to stop their
vehicle at any time during the day or night within
one mile of the border, if there is a suspicion that
the vehicle is being illegally operated.
If a police officer
witnesses the vehicle in operation between these
hours, they have the right to stop the vehicle and
verify it is being legally operated by the rightful
owner.
To
register for the program online go to:
