Apr 1: 5-7 pm - Allied Identity
Directors (AID) Reception
Women's Plaza of Honor
Please join us for hors d'oeuvres in
celebration of student activism, social justice presence,
and effective collaboration within the University of
Arizona! Since 2006, the Women's Resource Center (WRC)
has worked tirelessly to obtain funding for a paid program
director. In 2008, the WRC began its long-term development
campaign by obtaining petitions, and letters from campus and
community members to show that there is a need for a more
professionalized center. After presenting a proposal, over
4500 petition signatures and numerous letters of support to
the Student Services Fee Board, the Women's Resource Center
was awarded funding to hire their first full-time paid
director. The WRC would like to honor our campus and
community allies who were essential in the hiring and
celebrate the beginning of a professionalized program.
Additionally, the UA established the Office of LGBTQ Affairs
in 2007. This momentous decision was brought about after
nearly 20 years of advocacy by LGBT students, faculty and
staff. They devoted hour upon hour to promote equity in
University policies and practices. They worked equally as
tirelessly to sponsor educational opportunities to build an
inclusive campus climate. In recognition of the significant
needs of this marginalized community, the UA president's
LGBT Advisory Council recommended that President Robert N.
Shelton hire a director of LGBTQ Affairs, which he did in
2007. The position was filled for a year and when our first
director left for personal reasons, a hiring freeze was put
into effect. The position has once again been filled and
Pride Alliance would like to recognize the new program
director and those who helped fill this position.
Sponsored by: ASUA, Women's Resource Center, Pride Alliance,
LGBTQ Affairs, and the Dean of Students Office

April 2: Noon - Extreme
Variability: Southwest Climate
Biosphere 2
Melanie
Lenart, University of Arizona researcher, instructor and
Author of Life in the Hothouse: How a Living Planet Survives
Climate Change will speak.
Arizona
often goes from one extreme to the other, as this wet winter
in the midst of drought reminds us. These kinds of ups and
downs are likely to continue as the planet warms, given the
competing influences on rainfall in the Southwest.
Meanwhile, temperatures are expected to become even more
extreme. This talk will draw from past climates, present
understanding and future projections to ponder the coming
changes—as well as a few ideas about what we can do about
it.

Successful Storytelling in Persuasive Proposals
Vine Avenue Annex, Room 102, 1125 N. Vine
SPECIAL FOR THE UA COMMUNITY
ONLY...Please join the GIFT Center for the upcoming
Successful Storytelling in Persuasive Proposals. In
today's challenging economic and fundraising climate, are
you an effective storyteller in your charitable grant
proposals? Do your grant requests persuade corporate funders
and foundations? Does your writing stand out from the
"sludge pile" of submissions? Grant proposals that tell a
story can be particularly effective with private grantmakers.
Cheryl Clarke, renowned author of Storytelling for
Grantseekers: A Guide to Creative Nonprofit Fundraising and
co-author of Grant Proposal Makeover, will provide useful
techniques and helpful tips for crafting successful proposal
stories. She will discuss the parallels between storytelling
and grant writing: Compelling characters,
Detail-rich locations, Colorful dialogue, and Carefully
executed plot development. This creative approach can
even help with routine proposal requirements such as
budgeting and demonstrating impact. Cheryl will reveal how
to transform your story and makeover your grant proposals.
You don't need to be a novelist to learn how to adapt
storytelling techniques to your proposal writing. In-class
writing exercises will be incorporated so come prepared to
tell your story!

Send your thanks to
our soldiers.
It only takes a minute and is so worthwhile.
If you go to the
web site
http://www.letssaythanks.com/ you can pick out a thank you card
and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is
currently serving in Iraq. You can't pick out who gets it, but it
will go to some member of the armed services. It is FREE and it
only takes a second. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the soldiers
received a bunch of these? I sent mine, now you send one too! |

Curb Auto
Theft with the Watch Your Car Program:
It's Quick, Easy and FREE!
The Watch Your Car
decal program is a free, voluntary program that
vehicle owners enroll their vehicles with the
Arizona Automobile Theft Authority. The vehicle is
then entered into the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD)
database and participants receive decals for their
front and rear windows. By displaying the decals,
vehicle owners convey to law enforcement officials
that their vehicle is not usually in use between the
hours of 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM, when the majority of
auto thefts occur. In addition, by enrolling in the
Watch Your Car Program, vehicle owners also
authorize law enforcement officials to stop their
vehicle at any time during the day or night within
one mile of the border, if there is a suspicion that
the vehicle is being illegally operated.
If a police officer
witnesses the vehicle in operation between these
hours, they have the right to stop the vehicle and
verify it is being legally operated by the rightful
owner.
