Oct 2: 4pm - Energy for Arizona:  The Arizona Renewable Energy Standard
CESL room 103
The University of Arizona College of Engineering, College of Science and the  Eller College of Management presents a lecture series: Energy for Arizona:  The Arizona Renewable Energy Standard” By Kristin Mayes,  Arizona Corporation Commissioner.  Arizona was one of the first states in the nation to implement a renewable requirement for its electric utilities.  In 2001 Arizona’s Environmental Portfolio Standard (EPS) was initiated to promote the use and development of renewable energy.  Building on the EPS, the Arizona Corporation Commission adopted the Renewable Energy Standard (RES) in 2006.  The RES rules require regulated utilities to generate 15% of their energy from renewable resources by 2025.  Eligible renewable resources include solar, wind, biomass, biogas, geothermal and other similar technologies to generate “clean” energy.  In addition to utility-owned projects, the Commission required that a set percentage of the total resource portfolio come from distributed generation.  Since the adoption of the RES rules, Arizona’s utilities have made steady progress.  The planned Solana and Snowflake facilities point to Arizona’s renewable future.   Commissioner Mayes will address the importance of the RES in developing Arizona’s energy resources.  For more information: www.sustainability.arizona.edu

Oct 16: 10-4pm  - Staff Advisory Council Blood Drive

We all expect blood to be there for us, but barely a fraction of those who can give, do. Yet sooner or later, virtually all of us will face a time of great vulnerability in which we will need blood. And that time is all too often unexpected.

From its beginning, the American Red Cross has formed a community of service, of generous, strong and decent people bound by beliefs beyond themselves. The honor, spirit and resources of the American people comes forth with neighbors helping neighbors in need ? during earthquakes, floods, fires, storms ? and also for the deeply personal and often quiet disasters that require a gift of blood.

To schedule your appointment or for more information contact: Claudia at ariasc@arizona.edu

Identification is required at time of donation.  Want to know if you're able to give blood? Review the donor eligibility guidelines.

After a lifetime of racial insecurities (Am I Latina enough?), author and adventurer Stephanie Elizondo Griest moved to her mother's homeland of Mexico to learn more about her roots. Through her interviews with Mexican undocumented workers, indigenous resistance fighters, and gay/lesbian activists, she realized she wasn't alone in questioning her own Mexicanidad. Keynote includes a performance from her forthcoming memoir Mexican Enough: My Life Between the Borderlines. This event will be followed by a book signing in the Bookstore.  Sponsor: The Center for Student Involvement & Leadership, Women's Resource Center, ASUA   FOR A COMPLETE AND CURRENT SCHEDULE: Visit the Social Justice Leadership Website www.union.arizona.edu/csil/socialjustice  For More information contact Jennifer Hoefle of the Social Justice Leadership Center @ (520) 621-8046, or email: jhoefle@email.arizona.edu

Oct 26 - Making Strides Against Breast Cancer
Rillito Downs
This year, hundreds of thousands of people will hear the words, "You have breast cancer," and there's a good chance that some of them will be people we know and love. I have chosen to fight back against this disease and help make a difference by participating in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, and I hope you will join me.  Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is our opportunity to honor and celebrate breast cancer survivors, educate women about early detection and prevention, and raise money to fund lifesaving research and support programs to help fight breast cancer. But Making Strides is more than just the name of a walk, it describes the amazing progress we can make if we work together to defeat this disease. Below is a link to my personal page. I hope you will visit my site and sign up to join my team. If you prefer, you can start your own team, sign up to walk as an individual, or make a donation. Hope starts with me and it can continue with you. Please join my team and walk with us to experience an incredible day of inspiration and meaning, and to provide hope for all people facing breast cancer. To donate now, use this link to visit my personal page.  Sincerely, Claudia Arias

Send your thanks to our soldiers.
It only takes a minute and is so worthwhile.

If you go to the web site http://www.letssaythanks.com/ you can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently serving in Iraq.  You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to some member of the armed services.  It is FREE and it only takes a second.  Wouldn't it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these?  I sent mine, now you send one too!

Curb Auto Theft with the Watch Your Car Program:
It's Quick, Easy and FREE!

The Watch Your Car decal program is a free, voluntary program that vehicle owners enroll their vehicles with the Arizona Automobile Theft Authority. The vehicle is then entered into the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) database and participants receive decals for their front and rear windows. By displaying the decals, vehicle owners convey to law enforcement officials that their vehicle is not usually in use between the hours of 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM, when the majority of auto thefts occur. In addition, by enrolling in the Watch Your Car Program, vehicle owners also authorize law enforcement officials to stop their vehicle at any time during the day or night within one mile of the border, if there is a suspicion that the vehicle is being illegally operated.

If a police officer witnesses the vehicle in operation between these hours, they have the right to stop the vehicle and verify it is being legally operated by the rightful owner.

To register for the program online go to: https://www.aata.state.az.us/Watch_Your_Car/Info_Request/signup_request.html

Register by mail by downloading the form at: http://www.azwatchyourcar.com/pdfs/WYC%20-%20application%20form%20for%20website.pdf  Print it, fill it out and mail back.
