April 3: 7:00 p.m. - The Unexplained Death of Congolese
Leader Patrice Lumumba
Inn Suites Hotel, 6th and Granada Streets
A lecture by Professor David Gibbs. Patrice
Lumumba, the first Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic
of the Congo, was murdered on January 17, 1961, during the
political upheavals that attended that country's
independence from Belgium. Following his death, Lumumba
became a major icon for African nationalists, and indeed for
black people around the world. Lumumba's death was also a
key event in the larger "Congo Crisis," which entailed a
complicated set of interventions by the United States, the
USSR, and several European countries. It was a major event
in the history of the Cold War. This talk will focus
on what recent historical evidence shows about who planned
and carried out Lumumba's death. Lumumba's murder has long
been the source of controversy, with some interpretations
suggesting that the murder was carried out exclusively by
Lumumba's Congolese adversaries; while others suggested that
the murder was orchestrated by foreign sources, notably the
Central Intelligence Agency. Please join us as Professor
Gibbs discusses recent evidence compiled from the Belgian
archives, suggesting that it was in fact the Belgian
government that orchestrated the murder, with the CIA
playing a secondary role. Dr. Gibbs will also explore the
motivations of the various foreign and internal actors who
were involved in the murder. Guests will enjoy a
dessert buffet and lecture. Tickets are $25 per person ($10
tax-deductible). For more information or to make
reservations, please call (520) 621-3793.

information. Our website will be up and running by May 15,

our soldiers.
It only takes a minute and is so worthwhile.
If you go to the
web site
http://www.letssaythanks.com/ you can pick out a thank you card
and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is
currently serving in Iraq. You can't pick out who gets it, but it
will go to some member of the armed services. It is FREE and it
only takes a second. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the soldiers
received a bunch of these? I sent mine, now you send one too! |

Curb Auto
Theft with the Watch Your Car Program:
It's Quick, Easy and FREE!
The Watch Your Car
decal program is a free, voluntary program that
vehicle owners enroll their vehicles with the
Arizona Automobile Theft Authority. The vehicle is
then entered into the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD)
database and participants receive decals for their
front and rear windows. By displaying the decals,
vehicle owners convey to law enforcement officials
that their vehicle is not usually in use between the
hours of 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM, when the majority of
auto thefts occur. In addition, by enrolling in the
Watch Your Car Program, vehicle owners also
authorize law enforcement officials to stop their
vehicle at any time during the day or night within
one mile of the border, if there is a suspicion that
the vehicle is being illegally operated.
If a police officer
witnesses the vehicle in operation between these
hours, they have the right to stop the vehicle and
verify it is being legally operated by the rightful
owner.
