Supervisor's Appreciation Breakfast

Once a year SAC gets together with their supervisors to let them hear what SAC has been up to and receive the deep appreciation of SAC...

Many thanks to our supervisors for your support of SAC members. Participation on SAC requires members to serve three to five hours a month at meetings, working on committees and other related functions and by supporting their membership you have provided your employee with a unique opportunity to experience personal and professional growth. Through their participation in committee meetings and development workshops, SAC members improve their communication skills, their initiative and ability to lead, and become proficient team members. Your unit has benefited from the information and feedback your employee has provided as a result of their interaction with staff members across campus. They couldn’t do it without you and we commend you for ensuring their continued participation! - The University of Arizona Staff Advisory Council

President Eva Gonzales opened the morning with a few words...

Good Morning!  Welcome to our second annual Supervisor’s Breakfast. We hope you enjoy your breakfast and the presentation of “what is SAC”.

This breakfast is in appreciation of your support, Thank you! Also would like to thank the committee who put this breakfast together. They organized this wonderful event, Please stand up and let’s give them a round of applause!

Being President for the past two years has given me the opportunity to learn and help Classified Staff...we represent nearly 6,000 staff.

I personally would like to thank my Department Head, Mike Shupe for the encouragement and support that allowed me to participate. Without this encouragement and support from my department and fellow staff members I would never have been able to:

  • Attend the various meetings associated with my position
  • Speak at the President’s inauguration
  • Serve on the Patti Ota’s 5 year review
  • Attend Faculty Senate and Shared Governance meetings
  • Be part of CSW (Commission of the Status of Women)
  • UA Day of Caring Steering Committee

I have networked and met new colleagues which have helped me in my everyday work. Again Thank you and pass the word to your fellow Supervisor’s that it is worthwhile for their staff members to participate in SAC

Eva introduced our special speaker Cathy Nicholson, SPHR, Director, HR Services (AHSC)

Cathy has been in HR management at the UA for 25+ years, directing a variety of areas including Employee Relations, Compensation, HR Project Management and HR-IT. She was instrumental in the development of the UA's Workplace Violence Policy and currently participates on the Campus Emergency Response Team. She's also been an active advocate for shared governance groups on campus. Prior to her years in Tucson, she worked in HR at Penn State and Illinois State University, and has a B.S. in Management, as well as certification by the Society for Human Resources Management as a Senior Professional in Human Resources. Cathy is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Arizona Chapter of CUPA-HR and the national Strategic Long Range Planning Committee.

Cathy has been an important part of SAC history and avidly spoke of that history and accomplishments including how we came into being and the importance of our mission and accomplishments:

Presidents: past, present & future
SAC president Eva Gonzales, UA President Robert Shelton, SAC past president Kathi Hart and Future SAC president Randy Livingston

We were honored to have Dr Shelton pop in after another meeting...unfortunately most attendees were just leaving, but it was wonderful for those of us still there to talk with him and touch base.
