Shelton Fields Questions at Staff Advisory Council Meeting

University of Arizona President Robert Shelton was the guest of honor at yesterday's Staff Advisory Council meeting, addressing employee issues ranging from parking to politics.

Shelton said he saw the opportunity to speak to the council as a chance to learn from the staff and gain from their insights and experiences.

"The reason this university continues to get better is you," he told the crowd, adding that the staff is helping the UA maintain its status as an asset to the people of Arizona and to the nation.

During a question-and-answer session, Shelton addressed staff salary, parking issues, morale and growth.

More parking lots and garages are scheduled to be built in the coming years, which means more available spaces and permits, Shelton said. Parking spaces are built on campus at a cost of about $1,500 each, dirt cheap compared with $20,000 per space at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where Shelton recently served as vice president and provost.

Another major concern expressed by members of the council was low morale among classified staff.

Shelton said being a very public advocate for employees will help him champion their needs and provide them with the best possible work environments. He talked about his philosophy regarding his employees, which he frequently shares with the Arizona Board of Regents.

"Take care of people and everything else will fall into place," he said. "I don't think (the regents) will get tired of hearing me say that anytime soon."
