HIRING PROCESS ALERT
Recently, the US Department of Labor disqualified some faculty job placements. The DOL has not yet updated its rules to take into account the digital medium or digital job advertisements. In order to be deemed full and adequate, searches must be advertised in a printed version in print medium whether or not it is obvious that an electronic advertisement would be the most far-reaching and effective. DOL’s antiquated rules have caused considerable grief to a few recently hired foreign nationals from a number of different countries and the departments that hired them. It is not apparent that the DOL has targeted any particular discipline or region of origin of candidates. If you are hiring, advertise in at least one well-known print venue in addition to appropriate electronic lists. Note the following deadlines for the print version of MESA’s Newsletter.

Open societies are characterized by the rule of law; respect for human rights, minorities, and a diversity of opinions; democratically elected governments; market economies in which business and government are separate; and a civil society that helps keep government power in check.  To achieve its mission, OSI seeks to shape public policies that assure greater fairness in political, legal, and economic systems and safeguard fundamental rights. On a local level, OSI implements a range of initiatives to advance justice, education, public health, and independent media. Those foundations were established, starting in 1984, to help countries make the transition from communism. OSI has expanded the activities of the Soros foundations network to encompass the United States and more than 60 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
