1,400 people attended the MESA 2004 annual meeting in San Francisco. The meeting began under the cloud of a labor dispute, as Unite Here Local 2 workers picketed the Hyatt Regency, which had locked them out on October 1. The strike/lockout ended as the MESA meeting began on Saturday, November 20, when the San Francisco Multi Employer Group finally agreed to a 60 day cooling off period, during which time employees would be allowed to return to work and contract negotiations would continue. The MESA meeting was primarily held in the Hyatt Regency. Some 30 sessions and meetings were held in the Park Hyatt, and panelists relocated sessions to such venues as the YMCA, Hastings College of the Law, and the World Affairs Council. Panels were well attended under the circumstances, and both the book exhibit and film festival were very popular. |
