RESEARCH ACCESS IN THE ISLAMIC WORLD
Under current political conditions in the Islamic world access to research
resources may be difficult for foreign scholars, especially for American
scholars for whom access may be affected by the local view of United States
policies. U.S. scholars planning to work in the Islamic world need lead
time to obtain funding and to tie into the institutional networks that will
help them carry out individual and collaborative research. Under present
conditions such institutional networks, as represented by the various overseas
research centers that have facilities in Middle Eastern and other Islamic
countries, are increasingly important to facilitate the work of individual
U.S. scholars. They keep scholars abreast of changes in local policies
and situations both during the planning period and while in the
field; where needed, will act as intermediaries between scholars and local
government agencies; and may be of help in establishing collaborative
projects. In this panel scholars and academic administrators from the
Near and Middle East and South Asia, will discuss research access for American
researchers, as well as local conditions and collaboration and exchanges with
host country scholars.
