Following a brief survey of the traditional treatment of Hal in most textbooks and teaching materials, the paper will discuss (1) the place of "fadla" or peripheral (vs.'umda) constructions such as Hal in the class room syllabus, (2)principles of import to teachers and material developers, such as inclusivity, exhaustiveness, gradation, sequencing, and the type of expected  student competence (i.e. recognition and/or production), and (3) the pressing need of exploring not only what but also how to teach them. Iran's Literature in Exile (in Persian)

Chair: Hormoz Hekmat, Editor, Iran Nameh
Discussant: Ardavan Davaran, University of Notre Dame
Speakers:  Goli Taraghi and Majid Roshanger

During the two decades after the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Persian literature in exile has come to claim its own identity through distinctive expressive and textual innovations. The representatives of this new genre comprise not only a growing number of expatriate Iranian poets and writers but also some Iranian artists who have, for the most part, remained in Iran and yet experienced the inner vicissitudes of a semi-exilic life. Some of the salient characteristics of this exilic literature, as well as the literary manifestations of an Iranian writer's inner conflicts in an alien milieu, will be presented in this special session.
The speakers will be Goli Taraghi and Majid Roshangar. Taraghi is a prolific writer whose works have won literary acclaim both in Iran and in translation abroad. Her ties to Iran have withstood the test of post-revolutionary strains. She will talk about her post-revolutionary experiences that have found expression in her latest novel, Elsewhere, published in Iran early this year. Roshangar is a literary critic and translator who has edited and published  the Persian Book Review, a quarterly journal of Persian studies, since 1991. He will explore the salient features of Persian literature in exile with particular emphasis on novels and short stories.
