Special Features
Summer intensive language study in elementary Hebrew and Arabic. Member of Western
Consortium of University Centers of Middle East Studies for summer intensive language
study. Affiliated with American Research Center in Egypt, American Schools of Oriental
Research, American Research Institute in Turkey, the Center for Arabic Study Abroad, the
American Institute for Maghribi Studies, and the American Institute for Yemeni Studies.
The Center sponsors visiting faculty and lecturers, lecture and film series, cultural
>events, and interdisciplinary colloquia, workshops and conferences, in addition to
encouraging research in the Middle East. In addition, there is an Outreach Program with
services to teachers, schools, business groups and community organizations. American

Additional Information
Middle East related courses are offered in 23 different departments and professional
schools. The principal department for Middle East offerings, primarily in languages,
literature, and ancient history, is the Department of Near Eastern Studies. The
interdisciplinary undergraduate Group Major/Minor in Middle Eastern Studies focuses on the
contemporary Middle East, its peoples and their histories and cultures, and international
relations.
