GSIS Degree Requirements
MA: 90 quarter hours of credit including 15 hours (3 courses) in international politics, comparative politics, international economics, or political theory; 15-25 hours (3-5 courses) in Middle East area studies; 5 hours in methodology. Up to 15 hours will be credited toward foreign language study. A language proficiency examination is required. Up to 10 hours for thesis research. MA thesis or 2 substantial research papers is required.

PhD: 135 quarter hours of credit, including 15 hours (3 courses) in international politics, comparative politics, international economics, or political theory; 15-25 hours (3-5 courses) in Middle East area studies; 15 hours in methodology including statistics and research training; 15 hours (3 courses) in international security, technology, human rights, policy analysis, political economy, development, or conflict resolution. Minimum of 120 hours in formal coursework altogether. Beyond that, 15 hours may be credited for language study, 10 hours may be credited for MA thesis research. The 90 hours of the MA transfer directly into the PhD program.
