Support
Regular University of California financial aid is available on a competitive basis.
Graduate student support consists of fellowships, tuition waivers, and teaching
assistantships. FLAS scholarships for beginning, intermediate, and advanced students
available. Limited tuition, fellowship and graduate assistant support is available from
endowment funds given in support of graduate study in Islamic and Near Eastern studies.
Graduate research funds also available for specific projects on a competitive basis from
the UCSB Interdisciplinary Humanities Center and from the UC Global Peace and Security
Program.
Special Features
UCSB's new Center for Middle East Studies opened in August 2000 with
National Resource Center funding from the U.S. Department of Education. The Center
coordinates the activities of the B.A. program in Islamic & Near Eastern Studies, nine
MA/PhD degree programs with Middle Eastern emphases, UCSB campus programming and outreach
activities to Central California. The Center faculty jointly oversee the UCSB
Islamic Studies endowment which supports Middle East graduate studies and the federally
funded FLAS fellowships.
