MESA Description and
Mission Statement Proposed Changes Current Description and Mission Statement: (mission statement in yellow) MESA is a private, nonprofit, non-political organization of scholars and other persons interested in the study of the Middle East, North Africa and the Islamic world. MESA is dedicated to promoting high standards of scholarship and instruction, to facilitating communication among scholars through annual meetings and publications, and to promoting cooperation among those who study the Middle East. From its inception in 1966 with 50 founding members, MESA has increased its membership to more than 2,600 and has become a leading international organization for those involved in the study of the Middle East. MESA is governed by a nine-member Board of Directors elected by the membership. The association is a constituent society of the American Council of Learned Societies, and a member of the National Council of Area Studies Associations and the National Humanities Alliance.

East, promotes high standards of scholarship and teaching, and
encourages public understanding of the region and its peoples through
programs, publications and services that enhance education, further
intellectual exchange, recognize professional distinction, and defend
academic freedom. |
