ANNOUNCEMENTS

IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY

In class today we did the following:

1.  Dr H explained the 5 point THINKING DEEPLY opportunities and briefly went through the ones that are posted in D2L under ASSIGNMENTS.

The D2L Drop box for the Thinking Deeply Reports will be available this weekend.

 2.  Dr. H gave a presentation on Topic #13 on Understanding Systems & Feedbacks:

Topic #13 Understanding Systems & Feedbacks -- Intro to Modeling  [color pdf] [grayscale pdf]

3.  An ATTENDANCE CHECK was taken by answering the 7 QUESTIONS in the presentation as Dr H went through it.

4.  We then watched about 20-25 minutes of a movie  video:

Too Hot Not To Handle  "Too Hot Not To Handle"    see:  http://www.hbo.com/docs/programs/toohot/synopsis.html

The students were challenged to find an example of a FEEDBACK LOOP discussed somewhere in the video and got an additional Attendance Check credit if they stayed until the end of class, discovered the feedback loop, and sketched it out on a piece of paper.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • RQ-5 was due today 30 minutes before class.
(If you missed it, see FAQ #22 to find out how to submit an ABSOLUTION FORM.)

  • The MIDTERM EXAMS are still being graded.  When the grading is completed next week Dr H will do a GRADEBOOK UPDATE in D2L.  It will include your “interim grade” and bonus & AP points earned to date

  •  The directions for THINKING DEEPLY Activities are NOW posted in D2L under ASSIGNMENTS.  By doing one of these you will earn 5 "Thinking Deeply Active Participation Points"    See the explanation online to find out what to do.

IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY:

  • Review the presentations on Topic #13 above.  Even if you missed class today, if you go through the presentation you can earn an ATTENDANCE CREDIT by emailing Dr H the answers to the 7 Questions in the presentation  (NOTE:  Do try to answer BEFORE the right answer appears on the next slide -- the goal is for you to understand and learn, not mindlessly repeat what you see on the slide.)

  • Right now there is no way for you to watch the Too Hot Not To Handle video, although it's possible you may be able to rent it at Casa Video or another video store. According to the movie's website, the video is supposed to be available online as a podcast on the HBO site, but I could not locate it -- maybe you will have better luck than I!!  I will try to see if I can get it set up for our class as streaming video through the UA Library -- in the meantime, I am happy to lend out the video overnight to a student or group of students who want to watch it.  (We watched only the first 20 minutes and stopped at the start of the section on "Alaska Melting." )

  •  If you are able to get a copy and watch the video --  identify the FEEDBACK LOOP in it, follow the directions on slide 55 of the Topic #13 presentation and email Dr H with your answer to obtain the additional Attendance Check credit given  out in today's class.
