CLIMATE

Trewartha Climate Regions:

Climate Controls:

ITCZ:  A boundary between unstable mT air in southwest flow from the Atlantic and the Gulf of Guinea.  Produces hot, dry, and stable air to the north, however precipitation occurs south of the ITCZ surface position.

Saharan High and Mascarene High:    These controls are most effective in the summer producing rain due to local random convection.  Rain shower organization is a result of its convergence and cyclonic activity.

Azores High:   Effective control during the winter season that brings colder and dryer air.  Cool by night and warm by day, this High due to the North Atlantic STH, produces a widespread haze laden with dust that can persist for many days.  The Azores high is also known for accelerating cold fronts relatively close to equatorial region.

Climate websites:

~Africa’s Weather: A Geographic Introduction     http://www.marekinc.com/GeoOverviewWxIntro.html
A great website that includes many of the atmospheric processes we have discussed in class, in addition to its specific application to the African continent.

~Forecast Weather for Africa  http://www.meto.govt.uk/weather/africa/africaforecast.html
On this website you can find out about climate conditions in the past, present, and predicted future.  It also has great satellite images that provide us with information about temperature and cloud coverage.

~Global Eye  http://www.globaleye.org.uk/secondary_summer/eyeon/land.html
Has a basic focus on South Africa’s land and climate.

~World Book   http://www2.worldbook.com/educators/around_climate_africa.asp
Allows you to search through continents and major cities in order to research and compare all aspects of weather related patterns.
