Kaplan has worked on several research projects
using Y-chromosome and mitochondrial DNA to investigate Jewish
population genetics and Jewish population history. In the fall of
1999, he developed the protocols and infrastructure for a
collaborative project, run out of Dr. Michael Hammer’s laboratory,
between the University of Arizona and
Family Tree DNA. This partnership has grown into the largest DNA
testing service for genealogists in the world.
In his
lecture, Kaplan will cover recent research findings from studies of
Jewish genetics and Jewish population history. He will review the
basic principles of human genetics and the biology behind DNA
testing, explaining how DNA testing is performed and how samples are
processed in the
Human Origins Genotyping Laboratory at the University of
Arizona. This lecture will also include an overview of the
DNA Shoah Project, a unique, humanitarian effort at the UA that
is using forensic technology to reunite families separated by the
Holocaust. Following the lecture there will be an open question
session. |
