The Book of Psalms

 - also available as JUS 538 - contact the instructor, J. Edward Wright

The Book of Psalms is a collection of poetic masterpieces which have guided the liturgy of the synagogue and church for millennia. The emotions of the psalms range from heightened praise to painful lament. In order to comprehend more fully the religious experiences of the authors one must understand the characteristic features of Hebrew poetry. This course examines these features and focuses on both the literary development of these writings as well as what they reveal about the ancient Israelite religious imagination.

Prerequisites: none but recommended are two courses from Tier One, Traditions & Cultures (TRAD 101,102,103,104) or JUS 301 Jewish Civilizations.
