HEBREW CREDIT BY EXAM
" " Course Objectives

The Hebrew credit by exam tests are optional tests, and are taken by students who want to receive credit for Hebrew that they have studied elsewhere. These tests are not exams to determine placement in on-going Judaic Studies Hebrew courses.

For help in determining placement in the Hebrew Program, contact Judaic Studies at (520) 626-5758 or by email at jus @u.arizona.edu

Students enrolled at The University of Arizona may test to receive Hebrew credit through the Credit by Exam process. Students can receive credit for up to four semesters for Modern Hebrew which includes the following classes:  JUS 103A (Elementary Modern Hebrew, 1st semester), JUS 103B (Elementary Modern Hebrew, 2nd semester), JUS 203A (Intermediate Modern Hebrew, 1st semester) and/or JUS 203B (Intermediate Modern Hebrew, 2nd semester).

Each semester of Modern Hebrew is the equivalent of 5 lower division credits.

Native speakers of Hebrew may not receive Hebrew Credit by Exam credit.  A native speaker is defined as one who has completed her/his education through secondary school in Israel. A student who attended grade school (through eighth grade) in Israel, and who then moved out of Israel, is not considered a native speaker. A student educated outside of Israel whose parents speak Hebrew, and in whose home Hebrew is the primary spoken language, is not considered a native speaker.

The credit earned through Credit by Exam testing may not duplicate units already presented for admission to the University.  In order to receive Credit by Exam for any semester of 1st or 2nd year Modern Hebrew, a student enrolled in a higher level of Modern Hebrew must complete the lower level exam before the end of the 7th week of the higher level course.  For example, to receive Credit by Exam credit for 1st year Modern Hebrew (JUS 103A and 103B), a student enrolled in 2nd year Modern Hebrew (JUS 203A) must complete both 1st year exams before the end of the 7th week of JUS 203A.

The responsibility for preparatory study for these examinations rests entirely with the student.  Faculty members are under no obligation to assist with such preparation. However, occasionally Judaic Studies does offer tutoring free of charge.

Exams may be taken for credit only or for credit & grade (with a letter grade A, B, C, D).

Testing is administered through the Testing Office, (Old Main 223) (621-7589).

The cost of each 5-credit exam is at total of $120.00*

   $105.00*, paid to the University Bursar ($21.00/credit hour).
   $ 15.00
** (check or money order payable to UofA)  to The Testing Office (Old Main 223).

The Testing Office accepts only checks or money orders, made out to the UofA.  It does not accept cash or charge cards.

A Student may take up to two exams on one testing date.
The Student must present his or her CatCard and proof of payment on the day of the exam
.
