Living Beyond 100 Lecture Series
Jan 24 - Feb 28: 7pm - UA Centennial Hall
A Series of 6
Lectures Exploring Our World and Ourselves.
Many of today's children will live for
a century or longer. Which factors will affect their
longevity? Will they be happy, healthy and
productive? Emerging science and medical technologies
provide many clues regarding the future of aging, but
changing demographics and economics have also begun to
influence society's views. Beyond doubt, each of us will
face new levels of scientific complexity in this new world.
This Spring, the College of Science will present six free
lectures on the effects of long life, addressing the
opportunities and costs of the new longevity, the biology of
aging, the effects of aging on the brain, regenerative
medicine, the impact on global populations, and the
increasing intimacy between informatics and the aged.
At Centennial Hall on the campus of the University of
Arizona. Parking is available on a pay per use basis in the
Tyndall Avenue Garage. All lectures begin at 7:00
PM and are free to the public.

Write me up, PLEASE: Documenting
Performance Conversations and Disciplinary Actions
Feb 8: 8:30-10am - USB 214
By the time it’s time to “write up” an
employee, there is generally tension and ill will, but that
does not have to be the case. When managers use positive
language that describes aspirations for the future,
employees are encouraged to believe that productive change
is possible and can begin to accept personal responsibility
for their actions. When the need for change is not realized,
a past practice of positive documentation will make
disciplinary actions less subject to legal challenges.

Free and open to the public, ASM east gallery
ASM members and members of the Tucson community are invited
to enjoy this talk by Jackson Clark, third generation
trader and owner of Toh-Atin Gallery in Durango,
Colorado. With a remarkable depth of knowledge based on 40
years of interaction, Clark relates his and his family’s
encounters trading with the Navajo people. Humor, respect,
and great appreciation punctuate Clark’s very personal
stories, as he uses examples of specific weavings as
mileposts along the shared journey. Clark also shows how
traders have affected Navajo arts through time, and how
world commerce now affects them, pointing out that,
“Weavings, more than anything else, have defined the
Navajos’ ability to change and prosper under very difficult
circumstances.” Reception follows lecture. Kindly RSVP.
The Arnold and Doris Roland
Distinguished Speaker Series is made possible by the
generosity of Arnold and Doris Roland. Lecture and reception
hosted and presented by the Friends of the ASM Collections.
Expect the Unexpected
Feb 16: 8:30-10am - USB 214
How do you
handle an employee crisis, critical incident or other
unexpected event in the workplace? How do you help employees
cope with the death of a colleague? What would you do if the
ex-spouse of an employee threatened another employee? How
should you respond to claims of sexual harassment or illegal
discrimination? What do you do about employees you suspect
are stealing or engaging in other criminal acts? The
"unexpected" has become a growing part of our everyday
lives. In the chaos and confusion that arise from workplace
issues, problems, and critical incidents, it can be
difficult to keep a cool head and develop effective action
plans. In this session, we’ll focus on developing skills and
strategies for responding to critical leadership challenges
with complete confidence and resolve.

Organized Chaos: Leading Others
Through Change
Feb 28: 8:30-10am - USB 214
The old adage
“People Dislike Change” is simply untrue. People are very
willing to change – as long as it was their idea or they see
change as personally beneficial. The challenges begin when
change is imposed on those who aren’t interested in doing
things differently. The most effective leaders create
“change ready” cultures and are successful in creating a
shared vision for a better future. This session will discuss
the barriers to change and the strategies that can move
people forward..

room A104 The HOV training program has
been modified to meet State of Arizona requirements. HOVs
are defined as any full size van or Sport Utility Vehicle
with seating capacity of 8-15, and full size cargo vans.
Minivans and SUVs with seating capacity of less than 8 do
NOT require HOV driver training or certification. All
HOV drivers (faculty, staff, students, volunteers) must
attend a classroom training session, AND successfully
complete a behind-the-wheel road test conducted by RMS or
other authorized observer. Road tests conducted by RMS are
scheduled separately from the classroom training, and must
be done by appointment. The behind-the-wheel road test takes
about 30 minutes to complete. Departments may conduct the
behind-the-wheel road test at their own convenience with
their own staff upon prior approval and authorization by
RMS. Those interested in conducting their own
behind-the-wheel road tests should contact John Murphy at
621-4551 or

Ann Schmidt Run to Remember 5K Run/Walk

Cost: TBD The date/venue may change for 2012.
Awards to top three finishers in each division. Come for the
run, stay for the breakfast which starts at 7:30 am. FREE
T-shirt guaranteed if registered by August 1, 2012. This run
benefits the TSA Scholarship Fund. Ann Schmidt was a TSA
manager for 8 years during which time she took the position
to a new level. The 94 Red Girls were the envy of the club
for all that Ann did for them "above and beyond the call of
duty." Most notably, Ann was diagnosed with what ultimately
turned out to be terminal breast cancer in 2005. Despite
this illness and its debilitating treatment Ann maintained
her enthusiasm, positive attitude and caring approach to
managing her team right up to the time of her passing. All
the TSA girls loved her as she loved them. She was an
unbelievable role model for the girls in TSA embodying the
very core spirit of courage, determination and strength in
the face of adversity along with love and compassion for
others we strive so hard to instill in all TSA youth. For
this we name our annual run the "Ann Schmidt Run to
Remember". Visit:
