Wild Wild West Steampunk Festival
Aug 2- Oct 3: 10-6pm - Old Tucson Studios, 201 S Kinney Rd
This is your chance to get a glimpse at this phenomenon where it belongs – in an Old West setting. Even the little Steampunkers will enjoy arts, crafts, games as well as all the cool stuff already in place at Old Tucson. Celebrate the Spirit of the Old West of the 1880’s with gunfights based on actual events that took place in 19th century Tucson. Step back in time with Living History Presentations on topics like History of the Stagecoach, the Mercantile and Sheriffs of the Old West. Enjoy a musical salute to life in a frontier town celebrating cowboys and our local Mexican heritage. Stroll down memory lane with Old Tucson, A Musical History of the Silver Screen recounting music from films made on these dusty streets. Visit the Native Village to learn about local Native American culture from students of the Ha:San School – song, dance, and traditional foods to savor in our native village also featuring heirloom fig and pomegranate trees introduced by our Spanish ancestors. What is Steampunk? In three short words, steampunk is Victorian science fiction. “Victorian” references a time period and an aesthetic: the industrialized 19th century. Historically, this period saw the development of many key aspects of the modern world, and steampunk uses this existing technology and structure to imagine an even more advanced 19th century, often complete with Victorian-inspired wonders like steam-powered aircraft and mechanical computers. Where does the steam come in? Steampunk’s steam references more generally signify a world in which steam technology is both dominant and prolific. The changes in society brought on by steam-driven industrialization allowed for the unprecedented developments in sciences, society and goods that came to be associated with the Victorian era. Where does the punk come in? Ironically, it doesn’t. What is the appeal of steampunk? One critical aspect of steampunk is the tremendous diversity of appeal it presents, which allows it to offer something for just about everyone. A genre as large as steampunk has a wide-ranging appeal.  Visit: http://oldtucson.com/events/3481/
